SFSU Blackoard to Moodle (iLearn) Conversion Tool has only been tested on Blackboard Learning System 6.2.3 build 6.*

Transfer the following types of resources and activities:

• Digital files (Word, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.)
• Links
• Forums
• Test Questions

Step One
Export Course from Blackboard http://online.sfsu.edu

  1. Log into your Blackboard course at http://online.sfsu.edu
  2. Click on the course link, and go to the Control Panel.
NOTE: If the course title has a special character (e.g., “&”), then you should modify the Course Name and delete the “&” before exporting your course. (Control Panel > Settings > Course Name and Description).
  3. Click Export Course.
  4. Select the items you wish to export and click Submit.
  5. Make sure to download and save the export file to your desktop.

Step Two
Blackboard to Moodle Conversion Tool http://welearn.sfsu.edu/ctt/index.html

  1. Go to the online conversion tool (opens in new window) at http://welearn.sfsu.edu/ctt/index.html and convert your course.
  2. Steps of the conversion tool:

Page 1 of 3:

  1. Click Browse and select the Blackboard (Bb) Export File.
  2. Select the number of weeks or topics you would like to use to organize your iLearn course.
NOTE: The iLearn interface is organized by Topics (e.g., modules, chapters, units, etc.) or Weeks (chronological order). It is better to have too many Topics or Weeks. They are easier to delete in iLearn rather than attempting to insert them while using the Conversion tool.
  3. Select your preferences for the remaining options, and click the Upload Export File button. (The upload may take several minutes...the tool is breaking your exported course into individual components).

Page 2 of 3:

Two columns are displayed in this new screen. The Blackboard Export column (left) lists your exported Blackboard files. The Moodle Import column (right) will list the order in which your iLearn course files will be imported.
  1. In the Moodle Import column (right), enter the Topic or Summary names for the various sections you would like to have your information organized in iLearn.
  2. For each item (document, tests, discussion forum, etc.) listed in the BB Export column, use the “Move To” drop-down list to select the Topic/Week number where you wish to move it to in the Moodle Import column.
  3. NOTE: If there is an item you do not want moved into iLearn, do not select a week or topic from that drop-down list.
  4. Click the "Generate Moodle Archive" button once you have completed moving your files.

To change the number of weeks or topics in the iLearn course, click “Settings” under the Administration Block, then change the number of weeks/topics. Click the “Save changes” button at the bottom of the page.

  5. Click Upload a File Button, browse and choose the Coursename_MoodleImport.ZIP file (see Desktop) and click “Upload This File” button.

  8. Click Continue at the bottom of each page.
  9. Click the Restore This Course Now! Button.
  10. Click Continue until your course is restored.
